What is Non-Bacterial Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (Prostatitis)?

Non-Bacterial Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome, commonly referred to as CPPS or Prostatitis, is a condition characterised by persistent pelvic pain and discomfort in the absence of any identifiable bacterial infection. It affects the prostate gland, a vital part of the male reproductive system. At Aubergine Physio, we specialise in managing and treating this condition with a focus on improving your quality of life and reducing pain.

Symptoms of CPPS

The symptoms of Non-Bacterial Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome can vary in intensity and duration, and they may include:

  • Pelvic pain or discomfort: You may experience persistent pain in the pelvic region, including the lower abdomen, perineum (the area between the scrotum and rectum), or lower back.
  • Urinary symptoms: This can include increased urinary frequency, urgency, difficulty initiating or maintaining urine flow, or a sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder, pain, stinging and a burning sensation during or after urinating.
  • Pain with bowel movement.
  • Sexual dysfunction: Some individuals may also experience pain during or after ejaculation, premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, or decreased libido.
  • Psychological impact: Chronic pelvic pain can have a significant impact on your mental and emotional well-being, leading to anxiety, depression, or increased stress levels.
  • Some men report a sensation as if they are ‘sitting on a golf ball’, aggravated by intense sport activity, weight lifting, it’s common amongst avid cyclists and with prolonged sitting.

In certain cases, it is believed that inflammation may occur in the pelvic region of men without a discernible cause. Alternatively, for some individuals, the pain experienced may originate from the muscles or nerves in that area. Commonly known as CPPS, this condition typically presents as a persistent ache, discomfort or pain, which may be severe, in or around your penis, testicles, anus, lower abdomen or lower back.

Who Does This Affect?

Non-Bacterial Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome can affect men of all ages, but it is most commonly seen in individuals between the ages of 20 and 50. While the exact causes are still being studied, certain risk factors may contribute to the development of this condition. These include a history of urinary tract infections, previous prostate or pelvic surgeries, stress, and certain lifestyle factors.

Understanding the Prostate

The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It plays a crucial role in the male reproductive system. The primary function of the prostate is to produce and secrete seminal fluid, which nourishes and transports sperm during ejaculation. The prostate is also responsible for regulating urine flow by contracting and releasing the muscles surrounding the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body.
